The 3rd ICRIIS2013 has successfully being organized with the collaborations of five universities Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia. Organizing ICRIIS’13 through collaboration is a remarkable effort. This collaboration is an important step towards identifying, gathering and building a viable network of Information Systems researchers and practitioners in Malaysia and the region. The conference is chaired by Prof. Dr. Rose Alinda Alias, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Internationalizations, UTM and as a member of Information Systems Research Group (ISSI) under K-Economy Research Alliance, UTM.

Malaysia’s National IT Agenda (NITA), National IT Framework (NITF) and Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) were launched in 1996, exactly seventeen years ago. Thus the theme underlying this conference, “Social Informatics”, is timely because it highlights the importance of examining social aspects of computerization – including the roles of IT in social and organizational change, the uses of IT in social contexts, and the ways that the social organization of IT is influenced by social forces and social practices.

The ICRIIS’11 and ICRIIS’13 committee members initiated steps to establish the Malaysia Chapter of Association for Information Systems (MyAIS) early this year. The MyAIS is now recognized by the Association for Information Systems (AIS) as a formal chapter representing Malaysia. The AIS is the premier professional association for individuals and organizations who lead the research, teaching, practice, and study of information systems worldwide. In future ICRIIS will be as renowned as other IS conferences under AIS such as International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS), and Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS).

The main difference of ICRIIS from other IS conferences is the emphasis on Innovation. Thus, ICRIIS includes exhibitions of innovations in the IS field that can potentially benefit multi sectors such as society, business and government. I hope that, this exhibition will attract more participants in the future. The IEEE Computer Society has been a co-sponsor of this conference and all accepted papers will be available online at IEEE XPlore that will eventually be indexed in Scopus.  This conference will be a good outlet to initiate and seek opportunities for IS related research in the government and public sector.

The 7th Malaysian Software Engineering Conference (MySEC 2013)

Nov. 20, 2013. The 7th Malaysian Software Engineering Conference (MySEC 2013) has successfully been organized by members of Software Engineering Research Group (SERG) of K-Economy Research Alliance (RAKE) and Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The head of SERG, Assoc. Prof. Dr Shahida Sulaiman has been the Chair of MySEC 2013.

The speakers from industries and academia included Mr John Sullivan who is the Business Division Product Delivery Manager of MYOB Australia, Mr Matthew Khaw, the Partner Business Strategist of Microsoft Malaysia and Assoc. Prof. Dr Rusli Abdullah, an associate professor of Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

MySEC 2013 was officiated by Prof. Dr. Ali Selamat, Dean of RAKE, UTM. The organizing committee of MySEC 2013 has successfully organized the event that converged researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to advance the state-of-the-art of software engineering research and practice in Malaysia. RAKE has been supporting the event that provided numerous opportunities for academic and industry delegates to collaborate and learn from each other.

Besides MySEC 2013 that was organised on 20th and 21st November 2013, there were two co-located events on 19 November 2013 that were Agile Symposium and the 4th Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop (SEPoW 2013). As software development is known for its fast delivery, Agile has been one of the frontiers in software process model and approach. Hence, it is timely to have such symposium among MySEC delegates. In addition, the 4th SEPoW that was organized by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) provided a good platform among our software engineering postgraduates to receive feedback from the appointed software engineering experts in Malaysia.

Malaysian Software Engineering Interest Group (MySEIG) was established in 2005. MySEIG has been supporting both series of MySEC and SEPoW events until today.

MySEIG consists of academicians, researchers, and practitioners around the world and mainly in Malaysia. Such collaboration among universities and industries in Malaysia is encouraging and should be sustained in order to strengthen software engineering research and practice in Malaysia and to keep abreast with the state-of-the-art in the related fields.

Thus, the theme of MySEC 2013 that is “Software in the Cloud: The Way Forward” highlights the need to develop software towards cloud computing technology. As cloud has become in demand through its various services, it influences the way software engineers work. Phases in software development and maintenance mainly in testing have evolved greatly in tandem with cloud computing technology. In short, researchers and practitioners should be aware of the needs in the rapid growth of software technology.

Indeed MySEC 2013 was a great avenue for fruitful interactions and discussion among academics, researchers, and practitioners in sharing their expertise in related issues in software engineering besides discussing the way forward related to cloud computing.

Forty-four papers were selected to be presented and to be further extended to three respective journals that were International Journal of Innovative Computing (IJIC), International Journal of Software Engineering, and Technology (IJSET) and International Journal of Advances in Soft Computing and Its Application (IJASCA). One of the journals that is IJASCA, is SCOPUS indexed. This initiative will inculcate the need of extending software engineering work that is not only presented in a conference but also published in a related journal. On the other hand, MySEIG is working strategically to receive a continuous support from IEEE Malaysia Section mainly in IEEE publication for future MySEC.

The local organizing committee of SERG UTM would like to acknowledge all the parties involved in ensuring the success of the 7th MySEC 2013.

MySEC 2013 is the seventh regional conference has the aim to converge researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to advance the state-of-the-art of software engineering research and practice. This year members of Software Engineering Research Group (SERG) under Research Alliance on K-Economy (RAKE) and Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor are organising this event. The programme will provide numerous opportunities for academic and industry delegates to collaborate and learn from each other. MySEC 2013 will be hosted in Melaka, the historical state of Malaysia on 20 – 21 November 2013. In conjunction with MySEC 2013, the fourth Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop (SEPoW 2013) will be organised by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).

Researchers study role of computing in disaster mitigation

SUPERCOMPUTING has directly contributed to advancements in disaster mitigation and prevention, aiding ongoing research in Brunei and the region, a seminar heard yesterday.

Researchers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Malaysia’s Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) yesterday shared computer-aided findings on flood forecasting systems in Brunei and disaster alert systems in Malaysia.

These were discussed in the morning session of the second day of the “Recent Technological Trends in Computing Research” seminar ongoing at UBD.

UBD’s IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer – a mainframe computer capable of rapidly processing complex calculations – is credited for most of the scientific information presented in Dr Sandhya Aneja’s talk on UBD’s flood forecasting system.

“The model is already in use (in Brunei) through the UBD|IBM Centre’s mobile application for alert systems, which has been proposed. Soon, it will be available, within the next six months. It is in the working stage now although the accuracy has not been checked. Using daily observations, we are trying to verify this,” said Dr Aneja.

He added that the application is already in use and its developments are known to government agencies working in disaster management.

UTM lecturer Shukor Abd Razak also presented his proposals for a disaster alert system (DAS) based on a “friendship mechanism”.

Existing DASs in the region are still using conventional relay methods such as sirens, radio and television and fixed telephone lines, he said, arguing that these systems provide no guarantee that warning messages will reach the mass of the people.

Credibility was also an issue discussed.

“There are not many readiness programmes in the region. The problem is that people take for granted existing alerts. In the recent (dam burst) incident in the Cameron Highlands (Malaysia), sirens were sounded but people ignored them because they didn’t understand the message… We can eliminate this through social or crowdsourcing systems based on friendship and trust management,” said Shukor.

His studies referred to the “six degrees of separation”, adding that computer simulations show that individuals only need to know about five or six other individuals to identify a relationship.

His DAS-UTM proposes building on the real world situation in the region where there are large families and networks, allowing it to explore the suitability and efficiency of trust management and a friendship mechanism.

In November 2012, the UBD|IBM Centre conducted a training workshop on flood forecasting using UBD’s supercomputing facilities to address and tackle challenges in planning and developing strategies for better environmental management.

Its ambitious forecasting projects hope to predict weather patterns in the country for up to 50 years, while flood forecasting systems aim to provide a flood warning time of 18 hours.
